    SACES 2020-2022 EMERGING LEADERS

SACES is pleased to accept applications for their Emerging Leaders program. The SACES Emerging Leaders program is open to all active SACES graduate student members and first-year new professionals. If selected, leaders will participate in a workshop and leadership recognition, two years of service to SACES, and ongoing small group mentoring experiences.

    Program Overview

SACES Emerging Leaders (ELs) program is designed to promote our vision of cultivating “an inclusive community of counselor educators and supervisors who develop leaders and counselors committed to professional advocacy and dedicated to client equity and wellbeing.”  The program targets development in SACES goals focused on advocacy and promotion of community via connection, leadership, and service.

    During this time, ELs:

    ·       Participate in a workshop and recognition activity at SACES 2022 conference.  This activity will feature opportunities for networking, panel conversations, and reflections regarding leadership.

    ·       Over a two-year period, engage in approximately 30 hours of service (15 per year) via service during the SACES 2020 conference and on committees, interest networks, review panels, and/or SACES 2020 conference planning.

    ·       Participate in quarterly small group mentoring experiences.

    ·       Have the opportunity to participate in large group experiences held concurrent with SACES 2020 and ACES 2021 conferences.

In recognition of their contributions to SACES, ELs received a complimentary workshop and luncheon, business luncheon ticket, and registration for the SACES 2020 Conference.

    Eligibility

The EL program is open to all active SACES graduate student members or first-year new professionals at the time of application. We especially encourage applications from individuals who are seeking opportunities to develop leadership skills and strongly committed to SACES vision related to inclusivity, community, and social justice in counselor education and supervision. The review committee especially welcomes candidates who identify with historically marginalized groups and will heavily consider applications spanning varying and diverse experiences. Selection criteria include:

    ·       Demonstrated identification with and commitment to the counseling profession

    ·       Record of participation in professional counseling organizations and conferences

    ·       Commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and social justice

    ·       Vision for counselor education and supervision, including role of the EL experience in reaching the vision

Applications were due 5/15/2020 at 5:00pm EST, and notifications are made on or before 6/15/2020. If you are interested in the next SACES Emerging Leaders program, please check back in early 2022.

Applications must be submitted in one PDF document and include, in order,

    1.    Completed application form

    2.    Personal statement addressing selection criteria (not to exceed 2 pages)

    3.    CV (highlighting leadership, scholarship, education, and supervision activities)

    4.    Recommendation letter from a professional familiar with the candidate’s engagement in counseling and/or counselor education.

Emerging Leader applicants are encouraged to register for the SACES conference after they are notified; Emerging Leaders will receive a complimentary conference registration.

Please address inquiries and applications to SACES President, Elizabeth Villares, at president@saces.org

    March Webinar

Advocacy Considerations for LGBTQ+ Youth and Youth of Color in K-12 Public Schools

    Danielle McGarrh, LPC-Intern, NCC

    Thursday, March 19th 12pm-1pm EST
    Register through Zoom

Despite some progress, LGBTQ+ youth are still excluded from many state protections. This reality places equity out of reach for this marginalized student population, particularly youth of color, and jeopardizes student safety. Counseling professionals are uniquely positioned to counter these barriers, yet many feel their role is /webinars or are unsure of their own rights within their organization. This presentation takes this seemingly grey dilemma and reveals a clearer path forward for ensuring a safer and more supportive environment for our precious LGBTQ+ youth.

    Webinar objectives:

    1. After this presentation, attendees will be able to utilize professional ethics codes to guide their respective professional roles.

    2. After this presentation, attendees will be able to evaluate their organization for strengths and weaknesses and competently implement best practices.

    3. After this presentation, attendees will be able to summarize increased risk factors for LGBTQ+ youth of color.

    4. After this presentation, attendees will be able to implement advocacy actions in their respective states.

    • Danielle McGarrh is a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern working with the LGBTQ+ population. She is a second-year counselor education and supervision doctoral student at Texas A&M University-Commerce, where she works as a graduate assistant-research. She serves on the board of the Texas Counselors for Social Justice, is the founder of the peer-led counseling advocacy group, Counselor Advocates Learning to Lead (CALL), and a recent recipient of the TACES Outstanding Advocacy Award.
*Note: This webinar will be recorded and available for later viewing after 1 month on the SACES Webinar Page. Attendees who are present for the full webinar time can receive CE credit*

    Call for Proposals Deadline Extended

Good afternoon, SACES members and friends,

We are excited to have received over 730 proposals for our 2020 conference in Baltimore, MD. We want to thank everyone who submitted their proposal ahead of the deadline. However, we understand that some individuals encountered an error message related to their membership status. To alleviate some of the stress our members and colleagues may have encountered, the SACES Executive Board has decided to extend the SACES proposal submission window to Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 5 PM.

Here are some additional tips to avoid future submission issues.

    1. Your SACES membership is determined by the physical address you used to register with ACES and reconciled using the email address you use to sign on to the ACES, SACES, or ACA websites. You must use the same email address to sign in to the submission portal. If you have never logged into the SACES website or changed your password, you can select "forget password" and reset it.

    2. If you recently renewed your membership with ACES/SACES, it can take up to 24 hours for the database to be updated.

    3. If you have confirmed your email address account or renewed your membership, your status can be manually updated by emailing membership@saces.org and attaching a copy of your receipt or screenshot of your active member card.

    4. If you are getting an error message about a non-member account, that you recently created, the problem could be with your internet browser. Please change your browser and try again.

    5. Finally, please plan ahead! We want to be sure to provide everyone with the support needed to submit your proposal successfully, but we are all volunteers, so not available 24/7.

Please check http://www.saces.org/conference-2020 for all the latest conference news and updates.  See you in Baltimore!
